In rural Africa, a large number of enterprises operate under challenging conditions while transforming lives, generating income, expanding access to water and energy, and building more resilient communities. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are pivotal to employment across the continent, accounting for approximately 80% of all formal and informal jobs. Yet many of these businesses struggle to access domestic bank financing and fall into the so-called “missing middle”: too large for microfinance, too small for international investors.
Balim Investments was established to address this challenge.
Founded by HEKS/EPER, Somaha Foundation, and iGravity, Balim is an impact venture with the purpose of improving rural people’s lives through loans and technical assistance to African companies in agriculture, water, and energy.
2024 in Numbers
This year marked a significant step forward in that mission:
- 11 SMEs supported across Uganda and Senegal
- USD 6.5M facility size (+44% growth from 2023)
- 13,264 smallholder farmers supported
- 1,047,736 people gained access to water or energy
- 1,679 jobs and 10,480 income generation opportunities supported
Our investments are grounded in a robust impact measurement framework and aligned with the SDGs, with priority focus on:
- SDG 1: No Poverty
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
We also contribute to:
- SDG 2 (Zero Hunger)
- SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
- SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
Looking Ahead
In 2025, Balim will expand into Kenya and Tanzania, scaling its portfolio while staying true to its mission: improving quality of life and resilience for people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. With every loan we make, we aim to support SMEs that are driving progress across income, employment, food security, clean water, and energy access.
We continue to offer investors a double dividend, financial and impact, along with opportunities to be more directly involved with some of our portfolio companies. And for investees, we provide not just financing, but support with technical assistance in topics such as governance, business development, and sustainable agricultural practices.
